  1. P-38 BOMBER ESCORT TRAINING
  2.  
  3. During the autumn of 1943, the P-38H 
  4. began appearing in England, and on 
  5. October 15, 1943, the 55th Fighter Group 
  6. became operational.  The 55th was the 
  7. first of four Lightning fighter groups to 
  8. join the Eighth Air Force's offensive 
  9. against Nazi Germany.  Although the P-38 
  10. promised increased range over the P-47 
  11. Thunderbolt, the Lightnings suffered 
  12. from a number of mechanical maladies as a 
  13. result of the extreme cold in the high 
  14. altitudes at which they were required to 
  15. operate.

  17.                     YOUR MISSION

  19. Follow your flight leader as the two of you 
  20. escort a box of four B-17s en route to 
  21. bomb St. Omar Luftwaffe airfield.  Several 
  22. waves of Luftwaffe fighters will attack the 
  23. bombers.  Engage the enemy planes, and 
  24. keep them away from your bombers to 
  25. ensure that they hit their target.  Also, 
  26. remember that you are responsible for 
  27. defending your flight leader as he attacks 
  28. the enemy interceptors.  Once the 
  29. bombers turn for home, stay with them 
  30. until they reach the coast of England.
